The Savannah R-III School District has confirmed a case of Mumps at John Glenn Elementary School.
District officials notified families Friday and alerted the Andrew County Health Department, which is now conducting contact tracing. Health officials will reach out directly to anyone who may have had close contact with the individual who is ill.
Mumps is a viral illness that spreads through saliva or respiratory droplets and can cause swelling of the cheeks or jaw, fever, headache and fatigue. Symptoms typically appear about two to three weeks after exposure.
School officials say they cannot release identifying information and are asking families to monitor children for symptoms and keep them home if they become ill.
